ICONOCLASM (2017) is a piece written for pianist Lara Downes’ album “For Lenny” in honor of the Leonard Bernstein centennial. Although Abels never met the legendary composer/conductor, he attended New York Philharmonic concerts with the maestro on the podium, and observed him in rehearsal. This piece is meant to capture the puckish, mischievous, dynamic side of Bernstein in a style reminiscent of his own musical language. Available purchase at subitomusic.com.
